This apprenticeship prepares emerging project professionals to take responsibility for discrete projects, tasks and workstreams within organisations. It develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours to plan, monitor and deliver project outputs, manage stakeholder relationships, manage risks and resources, and contribute to operational and strategic project success.

Programme Overview

This apprenticeship prepares emerging project professionals to take responsibility for discrete projects, tasks and workstreams within organisations. It develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours to plan, monitor and deliver project outputs, manage stakeholder relationships, manage risks and resources, and contribute to operational and strategic project success.
Ideal for individuals who already assist in project delivery or who are ready to step into a project management role.

What Apprentices Will Learn

  • Project initiation & planning: defining scope, objectives, stakeholders, deliverables and success criteria
  • Resource & risk management: identifying, managing and mitigating risks; allocating resources effectively
  • Monitoring, controlling & reporting: tracking progress, updating stakeholders, managing changes and issues
  • Stakeholder & communication management: engaging stakeholders, facilitating meetings, ensuring clear communication
  • Agile and traditional methodologies: understanding project lifecycle models and applying relevant tools and techniques
  • Benefits realisation & closing: capturing outcomes, reviewing project success, handing over deliverables

End-Point Assessment (EPA)

  • At gateway, the apprentice must demonstrate readiness via portfolio and employer endorsement
  • EPA covers integrated assessment of knowledge, skills and behaviours
  • Typical assessment methods: project-based presentation or report followed by professional discussion
  • Grading: Fail / Pass / Distinction

Entry Requirements

  • Employed in or moving into a project-related role
  • Commitment from employer to support the apprentice (mentor, work tasks, time allocation)
  • Good standard of English & Maths (Level 2 or equivalent)
  • Basic experience of working in a business environment (teamwork, responsibility, communication)

Career Progression & Outcomes

On completion, apprentices may move into roles such as: Project Coordinator, Junior Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager or Workstream Lead. They will be equipped to take on larger project responsibilities and progress to full Project Manager or Programme Manager roles in future.

Funding Information

  • Funding band: £7,000
  • Levy-paying employers: The full cost can be funded through your apprenticeship levy.
  • Non-levy employers: You contribute 5% of the training cost, and the government funds 95%.
  • Small businesses (under 50 employees): If the apprentice is 16–21, the government funds 100% of the training cost with £0 employer contribution.
  • Additional support may be available for apprentices with learning difficulties or care-leaver status.

Delivery Model (ESTAR Approach)

  • Blended learning: live virtual sessions, online interactive modules, workshop-style practicals
  • Structured workplace tasks: aligned to apprentice’s own project role or employer context
  • Monthly review meetings with tutor and employer mentor
  • Portfolio build throughout programme, culminating in end-point assessment readiness
  • Duration: approximately 18 months, with flexibility depending on apprentice progress
