This apprenticeship trains learners to service, maintain and repair light vehicles (cars and vans) across multiple systems — mechanical, electrical, diagnostic, electronic, hybrid and high-voltage systems. The role covers everything from routine servicing through to fault diagnosis and complex repair.

Programme Overview

This apprenticeship trains learners to service, maintain and repair light vehicles (cars and vans) across multiple systems — mechanical, electrical, diagnostic, electronic, hybrid and high-voltage systems. The role covers everything from routine servicing through to fault diagnosis and complex repair.

Technicians play a critical role in vehicle operations, customer satisfaction and business performance. They must combine technical competence, diagnostic insight, commercial awareness, health & safety compliance and customer service.

What Apprentices Will Learn

Vehicle Systems & Diagnostics

  • Engine, transmission, braking, steering, suspension, electrics, electronics, hybrid/high-voltage systems
  • Use of diagnostic equipment and assessment of fault data
  • Logical fault-finding sequences, problem-solving techniques and component testing

Routine Maintenance & Repair

  • Service operations: oil changes, filters, inspections, consumables
  • Repair operations: replacing components, assemblies, system checks, calibration
  • Preparing vehicles for inspection and customer handover

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Health & safety practices in the workshop environment
  • Environmental and regulatory compliance, waste handling, emissions systems
  • Business operational processes, customer service, commercial awareness

End-Point Assessment (EPA)

Gateway Requirements:

  • Employer/training provider confirm readiness
  • English & Maths Level 2 achieved (if required)
  • Portfolio of evidence completed

EPA Components:

  1. Knowledge Test(s)– online exams assessing breadth of vehicle systems and theory
  2. Skills Test / Practical Task– apprentice demonstrates vehicle service, diagnostics and repair tasks in a controlled environment
  3. Professional Discussion– structured discussion based on portfolio and tasks

Fail / Pass / Distinction

Entry Requirements

  • Employer-sponsored role in a suitable light-vehicle service/repair environment
  • Motivation and mechanical interest in vehicles and diagnostics
  • Basic English & Maths (or willingness to achieve during programme)
  • Employer committed to providing relevant workplace tasks, supervision and mentor

Career Progression

Successful completion enables roles such as:

  • Motor Vehicle Technician
  • Automotive Service Technician
  • Diagnostic Technician – Light Vehicle
  • Specialist Technician (Brake, Tyres, EV/Hybrid)

From there, progression may include:

  • Level 4 Technician or Servicing roles
  • EV/High-Voltage Specialist Technician roles
  • Workshop Controller, Service Advisor, Team Leading roles

Funding Information (Standardised ESTAR Format)

Funding Band

This apprenticeship is funded up to the maximum band set by the Department for Education: £16,000.

Funding Information

  • Levy-paying employers:The full cost can be funded through your apprenticeship levy.
  • Non-levy employers:You contribute 5% of the training cost, and the government funds 95%.
  • Small businesses (under 50 employees):If the apprentice is 16-21, the government funds 100% of the training cost with £0 employer contribution.
  • Additional supportmay be available for apprentices with learning difficulties or care-leaver status.
  • There are no hidden costs.

Delivery Model (ESTAR Approach)

  • Blended delivery: online theory, live workshops, practical training in the workplace
  • Monthly progress reviews led by an experienced automotive tutor
  • Monthly employer-mentor check-ins to align training with business needs
  • Apprentices deliver real service/repair tasks in the workplace
  • Portfolio development capturing service jobs, diagnostics and reflections
  • Typical duration: up to 36 monthsdepending on prior experience
  • Full preparation for Gateway and EPA
